About this Speaker
Carla Brooks had several years of science teaching experience, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, and National Board Certification, when she moved to what she calls "the cutest little school you've ever seen" on the North Shore of Oahu. There she had the opportunity to teach Anatomy & Physiology for the first time and it soon became her passion and absolute favorite class to teach.
A big part of her love for A&P came from the enthusiasm of the students. They loved talking about how the body works, sharing personal experiences, and developing plans for careers in healthcare. So Carla developed guiding principles that led to the creation of a dynamic course centered around the needs and interests of her students.
Carla and her husband adopted two children from the Hawaii foster care system which eventually led to her decision to retire early from teaching and move back home to the Chattanooga, Tennessee area. While Carla was happy to be near family again, there were certain aspects of teaching that she greatly missed. Then, her dear friend and Waialua teaching buddy, Erica Colón, told her about Teachers Pay Teachers. And, that's how Science Island began!
